Arm Lift

Arm Lift in Los Angeles

Weight fluctuations and aging can both contribute to skin laxity and fat deposits on the arms. For some patients, even a healthy diet and regular exercise can’t improve these cosmetic changes. With an arm lift procedure (also called brachioplasty), you can restore a toned, youthful shape to your arms. There is an incision required for this procedure, and for some patients, the appearance of the incision is greatly overshadowed by the shape improvement that arm lift provides. Dr. Bresnick will help you understand if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

This procedure allows for correction of extra loose skin and fat of the upper arms. It is performed on patients who have poor skin tone of the upper arm area, and who have significant amounts of extra skin that needs to be removed. It can also address the unsightly folds of skin and fat near the upper chest and underarm area. Dr. Stephen Bresnick can restore a thinner, more attractive contour to your upper arms with brachioplasty.

How the Arm Lift is Performed

The arm lift procedure requires removal of extra skin and fat from the upper arm.  For most patients with significant amounts of excess skin, an incision is required along the inner aspect of the upper arm running from the elbow region to the armpit area.   Although the incision is on the long side, it is placed in an area of the inner upper arm which does not tend to show with the arm at the side or from the front or back.  Liposuction can be performed of the arm at the same times in many instances if there is excess bulk.

For most patients, brachioplasty will be approached using one of the following methods:

Is an Arm Lift Right for You?

Even if you make efforts to eat healthy and stay in shape, sagging skin can still persist on the arms. For some patients, excess arm skin is a result of significant weight loss or weight fluctuations over the years. For others, it’s simply from the effects of aging. No matter the cause, an arm lift can help restore a lean, attractive contour to your arms.

Ideal candidates for this surgery include men and women who:

  • Are within 10-15 pounds of their goal weight
  • Are committed to a healthy lifestyle
  • Exhibit sagging skin on the arms with fat deposits

What to Expect from Your Arm Lift with Dr. Bresnick

Patients will first meet with Dr. Bresnick for a personal consultation to learn more about the procedure, discover whether they’re a good candidate, and address any questions or concerns they may have. Dr. Bresnick truly enjoys getting to know patients during their consultation, and he will begin the meeting by exploring what cosmetic goals you’d like to achieve, and discussing the various ways in which those goals can be met. After reviewing your medical history and conducting a physical examination, he will devise a custom treatment plan to enhance your appearance.

Men and women who undergo arm lift surgery sometimes opt to incorporate additional procedures into their overall treatment plan. For total body rejuvenation, you may want to consider a procedure such as liposuction and abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). When combined, these procedures can produce an ideally sculpted figure and eliminate any residual fat or excess skin after dramatic weight loss.

If you eventually decide that surgery is right for you, your procedure will be performed in the comfort and convenience of Dr. Bresnick’s fully accredited surgical center, the Encino Surgicenter. The arm lift procedure takes about two – three hours to complete, and patients can go home after surgery to recover. Due to Dr. Bresnick’s gentle, meticulous technique, most patients experience little discomfort with the procedure.

The day after your procedure, Dr. Bresnick will examine you to assess your healing and recovery, and most patients are asked to return several more times in the weeks that follow. In terms of recovery, patients can usually return to work in about one week, but more rigorous physical activity should be avoided for about 4 weeks. It’s helpful to have a close friend, family member, or caregiver assist you at home for a day or two after surgery. While you’ll likely be able to carry out most of your daily tasks on your own, you should avoid lifting heavy objects.

FAQ’s About Arm Lift in Los Angeles

You’ll see initial results right away. Your arms will be slimmer and better contoured with the removal of excess fat (with liposuction) and/or loose skin (with a full upper-arm lift). The results will improve over the next few weeks as the initial swelling and bruising disappear gradually. By 4 to 6 weeks after your procedure, you’ll see the final results.

The results of an arm lift are long-lasting. You can extend the procedure’s positive changes by maintaining your weight with healthy eating and exercise habits. These habits will prevent your skin from stretching due to weight fluctuations. As you age, your skin will continue to lose some of its youthful resilience, but you can expect improvements from the procedure to last for many years.

Just like any surgical procedure, an arm lift will leave scars.

  • After liposuction to remove excess fat from under your arm, the scars will be tiny and well-concealed.
  • A mini arm lift leaves a small L-shaped scar where the upper arm meets the armpit. Both the size and location make this scar barely visible.
  • In a full upper arm lift that removes loose or hanging skin under the arm, the incision leaves a scar from the elbow to the armpit. This scar is visible when you raise your arms, but it will be hidden when your arms hang by your side. Patients who choose this procedure should understand the trade-off they are making: contoured upper arms in exchange for a long, but mostly unnoticeable scar.

Any scars from the procedure will fade in the months after surgery. At about a year, they will fade to almost match the color of your skin. Protecting the scars from sun exposure helps to keep them less visible.
