Benefits of Upper Eyelid Surgery – Blepharoplasty

“Why Do I Look So Tired All The Time?” Benefits of Upper Eyelid Surgery

Even after a restful night’s sleep you look in the mirror and tired, puffy eyes greet you back. No amount of eye creams or cucumber slices make a difference. What is going on? Unfortunately, your own genes are to blame. As we hit our 30s, 40s, and 50s, the skin around our eyes stretches. At the same time, muscles around the eyes weaken and fat shifts. For some of us, these changes are more dramatic and can result in sagging, drooping skin over the eyes. It makes our eyes look smaller and tired.

There is little that can reverse or correct this process except for cosmetic surgery, known as upper blepharoplasty, or more commonly upper eyelid surgery. Fortunately, this is a safe and effective procedure that overwhelmingly provides patients with great outcomes. In fact, upper eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures I perform in my office.
If you are considering upper eyelid surgery, here are five important benefits you can expect:
1. A more youthful and alert appearance
The number one reason my patients ask for upper eyelid surgery is because their eyes make them look tired and older. When you look tired, you often feel tired. Just removing excess skin from the upper eyelid can profoundly change a person’s appearance. Suddenly, they look awake. Their eyes are wide and expressive, and it can shave years off their appearance.

Improve peripheral and upward vision

A heavy curtain of skin over the upper eye can actually interfere with an individual’s peripheral vision or make it hard for them to look up. I’ve known patients who actually overwork their forehead muscles trying to keep their eyes open wide enough all day long to maintain a clear field of vision. Eliminating this drooping skin can give a patient a wider and clearer field of vision.

Local anesthesia and a quick surgery

A lot of my patients are nervous by the thought of going under general anesthesia. Upper eyelid surgery only requires local anesthesia, so the patient can remain awake during this surgery. The eyelid skin is anesthetized with local anesthesia, so the procedure is quite comfortable. Patients can also choose light general anesthesia. The surgery itself usually takes around three hours, so it can be performed in the morning or afternoon. As long as everything goes according to plan, the patient will go home after the surgery to recuperate.

Fast healing time and minimal discomfort

Patients will experience some bruising and swelling after upper eyelid surgery, but most patients don’t experience much discomfort. Some patients begin working from home within a few days of the surgery and most go back to work within a week. The bruises and swelling fade quickly, and within a few weeks, you’ll begin to see the true results of the surgery emerge. Even during the bruising phase, patients can easily hide the procedure behind a trendy pair of sunglasses, allowing them to get out of the house and go on walks or perform chores.

Maintaining a natural appearance

The beauty of upper eyelid surgery is that it gives you back your natural, youthful appearance. Most people will never even be able to tell you’ve had the surgery. Instead, you will be showered with compliments about how rested and refreshed you look. Upper blepharoplasty is not about changing your appearance but about restoring it!

Many patients who ultimately decide to seek upper eyelid surgery also ask for lower eyelid surgery to get rid of the big, puffy pockets under their eyes that can also make them look exhausted and much older than their years. Upper and lower eyelid surgery can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures, including a forehead lift, facelift, lip augmentation, and laser resurfacing.
