On the Fence About a Breast Lift? Read This!

Many women see breast augmentation as their only solution to improve their breasts’ size, shape, and position. However, our patients are increasingly recognizing the unique benefits of a mastopexy, also known as a breast lift.

Breast implants are still the enhancement of choice for most women, but breast lifts have steadily gained popularity.  Dr. Bresnick feels that implants are only required when a patient desires a fuller breast size or fullness in the upper chest.  If you have the breast tissue to provide the degree of fullness desired, than a breast lift can redistribute the breast tissue to allow a beautiful reshaping!

According to stats from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the growth in breast lifts has doubled the number of breast implant surgeries performed in recent years. Though lifts are steadily gaining ground on augmentations, many people decide to combine procedures to fulfill their aesthetic goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

A breast lift can benefit women who are concerned about their breasts sagging, leading to downward-pointing nipples and enlarged areolas. These are conditions associated with age, pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuation. Genetics play a role, too.

How a Breast Lift Works

A breast lift can accomplish several things. First, it corrects the nipple/areola complex, repositioning and resizing it when it is too low. Second, it removes excess skin that leads to sagging and a deflated appearance. Third, you will enjoy a perkier appearance with smoother breast skin and tighter tissue.

Finally, a breast lift can shape and lift the breast tissue itself. Again, the goal is less sagging and a bit more upper-pole fullness. A breast lift uses many techniques to achieve these various goals, depending on your body type and the current condition of your breasts.

What About Scarring?

The surgery typically requires one of two incision options.  The first is known as a vertical or lollipop lift and is done with an incision around the areola and vertically to the crease.  The full lift is the lollipop lift with skin removal from the breast crease as well.   The incisions tend to heal nicely.  The incision around the areolas tends to blend nicely and the vertical incision fades as well.  Patients with brown skin tones can also benefit from bleaching cremes which we can provide and scar management is available for all patients.

What Can a Breast Lift Do for You?

After a breast lift, your breasts will sit higher on your chest, making it easier for you to find well-fitting bras and enhancing your self-confidence. This outcome is beneficial for mothers who have experienced breast changes from pregnancy and breastfeeding. In addition, after a mastopexy, your breasts will feel firmer, giving them a more pleasing contour and youthful appearance.
