A breast lift is a popular procedure after pregnancy and breastfeeding, aging, or weight fluctuations over the years. Enjoy natural, youthful breasts at any age!

What Is a Breast Lift?

Over time, breasts tend to droop due to the forces of gravity and the natural aging process. The medical term for this gradual sagging is ptosis. Many factors contribute to the problem, including genetics, lifestyle, weight fluctuations, skin elasticity, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.  Some women have sagging breasts as teenagers, not due to aging or life changes, and would like to correct a shape that they have never been happy with.

A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, is a surgical cosmetic procedure that addresses breast ptosis by removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue, and repositioning the breasts higher on the chest wall. Sometimes the areola becomes enlarged over time, and a breast lift can correct this problem as well. The result is a better proportioned, more youthful-looking breast contour.

Dr. Bresnick uses different surgical techniques to covert various breast shape problems. Issues to consider include your breast size and shape, the size and position of your areolas, the degree of breast sagging, and the elasticity of the skin on your breasts. Dr. Bresnick will evaluate your breasts and advise you of what technique will offer the best results in breast lifting.

For many patients, a full lift may be the best choice, as it enables dramatic shape improvements. This technique involves lifting, recontouring, and reshaping the breast. Dr. Bresnick can lift the nipples six inches or more if necessary. The procedure requires several incisions, including one around the areola, a vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast fold, and an incision in the breast crease.

Another technique, used to correct mild sagging, is the peri-areolar or “doughnut” lift, which requires only making an incision around the areola. A crescent lift might be an alternative solution if the problem is a downward-pointing areola and breast shape is not a concern.

Recovery After a Breast Lift

We perform all breast lift surgeries at the Encino Surgicenter, conveniently located adjacent to our offices. Most patients will return home the same day as their procedure to recover in the comfort of their home. You will have some downtime after surgery, but many of our patients are pleasantly surprised by how quickly recovery progresses after a breast lift. You’ll be back on your feet and enjoying rejuvenated breasts very soon.

You will have some downtime after surgery. In your consultation with Dr. Bresnick, he will explain how long you can expect that to last and what activities you should avoid. You’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra as the incisions heal, to support your breasts and minimize swelling. In the first few days after surgery, you should not do any heavy lifting and should avoid jarring activities like running or horseback riding. After that, you can gradually resume your normal activities and will be fully recovered after about eight weeks. Many of our patients who follow all their post-surgical instructions to the letter quickly progress in recovery after a breast lift.

Dr. Bresnick will check-in on your progress several times during breast lift recovery. He personally calls patients the first night after surgery, and we schedule several follow-up visits at our plastic surgery offices to assess healing and recovery.

Am I a Good Candidate for Mastopexy?

Mastopexy, or breast lift surgery, is an excellent option for women with breast drop or ptosis. Come meet with Dr. Bresnick and explore your options. He can help you determine if this procedure is the right fit.

You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if:

  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag or have lost their youthful shape.
  • You want to change the shape of your breasts.
  • Your nipples and areola point down, rather than forward or up.
  • When you aren’t wearing a bra, your nipples fall below your breast creases. (You can test this by placing a sheet of paper underneath your breast so that it rests within this fold. Looking in the mirror, check to see whether your nipples fall below the top edge of the paper.)
  • The skin on your breasts has stretched or your areolas have become enlarged.
  • One breast sits lower than the other.

The best candidates for any plastic surgery procedure are in good health and close to their ideal weight. If you are planning to have children soon, it may be best to delay a breast lift, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can change the shape and size of your breasts.

It’s crucial to note that breast lift surgery will not change the size of your breasts. If you feel that your breasts are too small, you might consult with Dr. Bresnick about combining a breast lift with breast augmentation. If you think your breasts are too large, you might consider a breast lift in combination with breast reduction. A breast lift without implants corrects sagging, raises the position and orientation of the nipples, and improves breast shape.

Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Lifts

You’ll see a positive change in the shape and position of your breasts right away, and the results will continue to improve in the months after surgery. Full results are visible at about a year, once breast tissue has settled into its final position and scars have faded to match your skin tone.

The results of a breast lift are long-lasting. Of course, your body will continue to age – a process that will include some loss of skin resilience. But the improvements made with a breast lift will always make your breasts look more attractive than they would have without the procedure. You can help extend your breast lift outcomes by maintaining a steady weight and wearing a well-fitted bra. Dr. Bresnick recommends getting a professional fitting for a new bra after your breast lift.

Many women breastfeed after breast lift surgery, but there is some risk that you will lose the ability to produce milk after a breast lift, especially if the procedure requires the removal of large amounts of skin and a significant shift in the position of the nipple. If this is a concern for you, be sure to bring it up in your consultation with Dr. Bresnick.

There is another consideration as well: For long-lasting results, it’s best to have a breast lift after you have finished having children.

A breast lift raises the position of the breasts on the chest wall and improves their shape to make them rounder, firmer, and more uplifted. Breast augmentation increases the size and volume of the breasts, which can also improve their shape and appearance, but in different ways. If your most significant source of dissatisfaction with your breasts is their sagging shape and the dropped position of the nipple, a breast lift is probably what you need. If you would like to have larger, fuller breasts, then augmentation may be the answer.

In your consultation with Dr. Bresnick, he will recommend the treatment that will best help you achieve your goals for your body. For many women, that’s a combination of a breast lift and breast augmentation. Dr. Bresnick can perform both procedures in the same surgical visit, minimizing recovery time. Or he may recommend a breast lift with breast reduction if breast sagging is the result of overly large breasts that cause you discomfort and make you self-conscious.
