Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Why Plastic Surgeons and Patients Are Falling in Love with Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Last year, the FDA approved a new type of breast implant from Sientra, and plastic surgeons and patients were really impressed. Sientra calls these implants “highly cohesive” or “form-stable” breast implants, but they quickly earned a nickname that stuck — “gummy bear implants.” The name comes from the way the silicone gel holds together and maintains an element of shape, also known as “cohesiveness.” Additionally, the high degree of cohesiveness creates an excellent safety profile should the implant shell break down. The cohesive silicone within the implant will stay together the same way a gummy bear candy would if it were cut in two.

Who Should Consider Gummy Bear Implants

Highly cohesive, or gummy bear implants are available in both round and shaped versions. The shaped version is a good choice for women with limited breast tissue who wish for a really sloped breast. The round version is a better choice for most patients and offers both a natural look with more fullness above the nipple. The round implants are associated with a more youthful look and have a lower revision rate.

Not all patients are ideal candidates for the gummy bear. These implants require a patient to have at least a “B” cup of breast tissue for ideal results. The implants are softer than natural breasts, but not as soft as silicone gel implants. A consultation will determine if you are a candidate for the gummy bear and what this type of implant may offer you!

Since FDA approval of gummy bear implants, more surgeons are offering this type of implant and more patients are choosing them. Thus far, my patients have been universally happy with the results of surgery for the reasons listed below:

Gummy Bear Implants Create a Soft, Perky Breast

Gummy bear implants are made of a denser silicone than a traditional silicone implant, which allows them to hold their shape better and sit higher on the chest. This results in a perky, full breast that helps clients look younger and obtain the beautiful, curvy figure they want. Many of my patients report that they don’t even need to wear a bra from time to time which gives them more clothing options.

Gummy Bear Implants are Less Likely to Rupture

Every breast augmentation patient accepts the small risk of a rupture. Although all silicone implants are made of a gelatin form of silicone which stays together well, a highly cohesive gel implant is the least likely to have silicone extend far from the implant shell and should be easier to remove. An implant might rupture if the patient experiences chest trauma, such as a car accident and airbag deployment, aggressive mammography with older implants, or other causes.

Are You a Good Candidate for Gummy Bear Implants?

Honestly, I think every woman seeking breast augmentation with at least a B cup should consider gummy bear implants as an option. The round version is no more expensive than traditional silicone breast implants. I believe the attractive and youthful breasts they create can look beautiful on all body types.

Gummy bear implants can be combined with a breast lift or used without a lift for many patients. If you are interested in learning more about whether a gummy bear breast implant is right for you, don’t hesitate to contact my office to schedule a consultation.
