Gynecomastia: The Challenges of Male Breasts

Gynecomastia: The Challenges of Male Breasts

Puberty is always a difficult time for boys and girls as their bodies change. For a surprisingly large percentage of boys, puberty can bring even more challenges through the growth of male breasts. The technical term for male breasts is gynecomastia, and we still don’t really know why some men develop enlarged breasts when they go through puberty. It doesn’t necessary have to do with weight (though men can develop gynecomastia later in life as a result of weight gain), and may be attributable to genetics or hormones.

Male breasts (or “man boobs” as they are sometimes mockingly called), are often a source of great embarrassment for young men. These unfortunate young adults may hide behind loose jackets or sweaters and feel too ashamed to ever go swimming or work out at the gym. Gynecomastia can have a significantly negative impact on a person’s self-esteem and quality of life. That is why I find gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, such a gratifying service that I can offer patients.

Gynecomastia Surgery

For patients who suffer from gynecomastia not related to weight gain, surgery is really the only way to get rid of excess breast tissue. The surgery works wonders, and my male breast reduction patients are some of the happiest post-op patients.

During male breast reduction surgery, the patient is put under general anesthesia. The surgeon will then go in and remove excess fat using liposuction techniques. In many cases, the surgeon will also excise glandular breast tissue and remove excess skin. The surgeon may also reduce and/or reposition the areola if it has been stretched or droops.

The patient will be sore after the surgery and will be prescribed pain medication. He will need to wear a compression garment that will help the skin and tissue resettle. The results of surgery are visible quickly and improve over the next several weeks. Patients are quite satisfied with the results!

A New Lease on Life

Almost every gynecomastia surgery patient agrees that the discomfort after the surgery is well worth it. The final results are often excellent, with almost all of the excess tissue removed. In many patients, you would never be able to tell that they once suffered from gynecomastia. Patients tell me all of the time about how much more confident they feel about their appearance. They don’t feel embarrassed going to the gym anymore and actually look forward to dating or spending more intimate time with their partner.

For most patients, the excess tissue does not come back, allowing them to lead more fulfilled and higher quality lives.
